The Tree of Life: Strength, Resilience, and Sustenance.

The Baobab Tree:

If you ever visit the vast southwest corners of Africa, you might find a tree so old its name is Grandmother, with some of the oldest trees dating back to A.D. 1600. Grandmother is a Baobab Tree, one of a species beloved worldwide not only for its longevity but also for its distinctive crown: a tangle of scraggly branches extends from the trees’ top like electrocuted hair. In ancient mythology, the baobab is known as the tree the gods planted ‘upside down’ as the branches resemble a root-like structure.

Scientifically known as Adansonia, the Baobab Tree is also referred to as the “Tree of Life” due to its remarkable ability to sustain life in the harsh and arid environments of Africa. This iconic tree can store hundreds of gallons of water in its massive trunk during the rainy season, which it can then use to survive extended periods of drought. This water reservoir not only sustains the baobab tree itself but also provides a vital water source for animals during dry spells, earning it the reputation of a life-saving oasis in the African savanna.

A symbol of strength, resilience, and sustenance in African folklore, this sacred tree also serves as a gathering place for meetings, celebrations, and rituals. Furthermore, its large, hollow trunk has even been used as a shelter, storage space, or even a makeshift prison in some historical contexts.

FACT: Lemurs, the long-tailed tree-swinging primates, play an important role as the main pollinators for Baobab trees. Lemurs are primarily fruit eaters and may help disperse baobab seeds through their consumption and dispersal of seeds in their droppings. Moreover, of the 109 different lemur species in Madagascar, nearly a third of them are perilously close to disappearing.
